Final Report: Kommunale 2003
15 16 October 2003, Nuremberg Exhibition
Over 7% more visitors!!
Seven percent more visitors than the last show demonstrates that the concept is well accepted, following on from 1999 and 2000, the Kommunale has firmly established itself said Friedhelm Lenz, Manager of CCN Congress Centre Nuremberg and the Frankenhalle, in closing the Kommunale which took place 15-16 October in the Nuremberg Exhibition Centre. 4258 Trade visitors, predominantly mayors, city and district councillors together with Heads of Departments in towns and municipalities, gained information over two days from 164 exhibitors about products and services for the communal needs. The addresses and forums in the associated branch congresses, organised by the Bavarian municipal assembly, were also well attended.
The display, on over 8,000 square metres of exhibition floor space, offered the communities a wide range of specialised services, beginning with IT Solutions for public administration to road signs and street lighting. In the face of the difficult financial situation solutions with good cost-effectivness were asked for by buyers and procurers.
Exhibitors declared themselves happy, with 81% rating their participation as good, according to an on going opinion poll. Especially valued was the character of branch visitors, with about 70% of exhibitors valuing their visitors technical competence and qualification as good" or "very good and 91% confirmed reaching their ideal target groups.
In focus in the Congress: Communal Finances.
Working on with empty purses was the central theme of the parallel trade congress forum. We chose this motto because all of us here at the Kommunale are looking for ways out of the financial muddle, that will allow our citizens to keep the services they are used to said Dr. Uwe Brandl, President of the Bavarian municipal assembly during the opening ceremonies. The Kommunale is the ideal forum, because here in the Congress we can discuss the latest political developments, and simultaneously gain information over the newest products and offers for our needs.

The lectures and podiums discussions in the Congress were well attended on both days. The expected big rush happened on the first day during the address of the financial specialist of the municipal assembly, Dr. Johann Keller, on the theme The Municipal Finance Crisis- is the communal self administration on the way out? Over 500 interested listeners and participants crushed themselves into the hall, which in the shortest time seemed to be overflowing with the cares and problems of these visitors.
Another highlight of the Congress was the podium discussion Business in times of empty purses- challenge for Bavaria' communities on the second day. Under the skillful moderation of Daniella Phillipi, head of the State politics department on Bavarian Rundfunk (radio and TV), Bavarias Minister of State Erwin Huber, the MPs Christine Scheel and Gerda Hasselfeldt, Secretary of State in the Federal Ministry of Finance Volker Halsch and Dr. Uwe Brandl, President of the Bavarian municipal assembly discussed the present state of affairs of the reformation of municipal finances at the federal level. The comments and interjections of the many local politicians present added welcome salt to the discussion. The emotionally charged debate demonstrated clearly to all visitors why Berlin can find no satisfactory solution to the reformation of municipal finances.
The next Kommunale
is scheduled for 19-20 October 2005
