GIS Project Town of Nördlingen From this year on the former free Reichstadt has a digitised record of water mains and pipe networks in the Land Registry. The town lies in the middle of the Ries meteor crater by the foothills of the Swabian Alb, and can look back on a long and moving history, and in 1998 celebrated the 1100 anniversary of its foundation. In Nördlingen weight is not only placed on historical values, but also on modern facts and figures. As such a modern system of records is necessary, such as that for the modern administration of the water and sewage mains. Based on these needs the Steinbacher-CONSULT organisation was engaged at the end of 1999 to set up a Geographical Information System and to collate the required information.
During the first phase of the project 10 town districts were surveyed, using tachymetric and satellite geodesic methods. All relevant parts of the water supply and drainage were documented in a Gauss-Kruger Coordination System. After correlation of the data the town of Nördlingen obtained a practicable and tested GIS Information System. As a result from the very beginnings it was possible to have direct access to digital field mapping, an automatic Property Register (Liegenschaftsbuch ALB), and to the water supply plan. During the years 2002/2003 the historical town central district was mapped. All in all a total of 4550 gullies, 5026 household drains and a network of over 181 kms of sewage mains were surveyed and recorded for the council department. Furthermore 700 hydrants and water distribution points were mapped.

Restoration and general Drainage Plan Based on the exact drainage map in 2003 it was possible to carry out all required inspections using TV methods. Following this a detailed restoration plan was prepared. The completion of the whole project finally created the Central Drainage Plan, which incorporated developments in the forthcoming years. Without the exact location of sewage- and water-mains a structured action in respect of the Management of the drainage and water supplies would be unthinkable.
During the preparation of the restoration plan and the resulting Central Drainage Plan geographic information systems were effectively employed.
The Steinbacher-CONSULT group is exceptionally pleased with the successful completion of the Land Registry for the town of Nördlingen and wishes to thank all involved Town Council employees involved, especially Mr Schwefel und Mr Bickelein for their help and cooperation.
