At last, a pavement thats gentle on the feet!
Schweinfurt Oberndorf looks a great deal better-thats the general opinion in the last few days over the repaired area south of Main Street, the streets and squares around the Glockenhof (Bell Yard).
It was the Oberndorfers themselves who decided up to the smallest detail how this delicate area around the school, kindergarten and church was to be restored, maintaining the historical atmosphere, and incorporated into the plans of Architect Dag Schröder. They are well pleased with the (except for a few trees) almost completely original repairs-not only because it didnt cost them a penny, they can also feel the difference in their feet!
You wont find a more gentle pavement anywhere in Oberndorf. Its called via Castillo and according to the Head of Public Building Jochen Müller, who introduced the material, its concrete mix with a special surfacing based on limestone. All of which is laid upon a percolation reduced load bearer. The 10 centimeter thick stonework also can take the pounding of agricultural traffic, and despite the cracks its more comfortable to walk on than conventional paving which is what the citizens specifically wanted. Surface water is run off by furrow-guttering into the main drains.
In the course of the repairs, in a street area that has remained unchanged since 1753, the complete technical infrastructure was renewed. So the area around the Glockenhof didnt only gain optical benefits from the new paving. The entrances and paths to houses were also redone, and there are also new benches and waste paper baskets, trees, shrubs and grass are soon to be planted as well. At night the whole effect is well set off with new street lighting.
In the coming Advents-tide an appropriate festive lighting will also be installed, and the Oberndorfer Christmas Market will be held for the first time in the Glockenhof. The Lady Mayoress is going to formally handover the restorations with the official opening of the the Christmas Market (Saturday 29 November, at 1 oclock), and on Sunday at 3:30 in the afternoon shell be back to give out the childrens presents.
