In order to maintain the long lifespan of civil engineering structures, repairs and rehabilitation measures may become necessary, and extensions, too.

Environmental effects, exposure to de-icing salt, traffic accidents, vandalism, but also outdated construction methods like inadequate railings or protective equipment which no longer meets today’s demands, cause shortcomings which have to be remedied. Apart from material damage the need for extending a structure, e.g. for a bicycle lane across a bridge, or reinforcements to increase the bearing load, may also require measures which are based on the special knowhow of engineers.
