Water supply

Measures in the water supply field ensure the provision of drinking water, industrial and raw water. Apart from the extraction of untreated water from wells, springs and surface water this also includes collecting rainwater with cisterns. Local authorities are often faced with considerable technical and financial challenges when it comes to the purification and distribution of drinking water. Providing water for fire fighting has to be looked at separately. 

Groundwater resources in arid and coastal areas are often supplemented by collecting storm water or by desalination in order to safeguard supplies of potable water.
